Martha Cove Marina
- Safety Beach, Victoria

The boardwalks surrounding the marina at Martha Cove are quickly becoming a focal point as new residents and visitors alike take a leisurely stroll to admire the outstanding views.

Civil One has added a distinctive look to more than two kilometers of the boardwalks with handrails fabricated from stainless steel. The company has used a post and handrail system utilising durable hardwood uprights with stainless steel handrails and capping over the end grain of the uprights.

The finishing touches include shadow lines on all uprights just below the capping with three strands of 6mm stainless steel balustrade wire running through the uprights for added safety and visual appeal.

St Kilda Pier

Access ramp for the disabled at St Kilda Pier

Located at St Kilda beach, a popular area for swimming or just relaxing with a latte, St Kilda pier is one of Melbourne’s icons. Stretching far out into Port Phillip Bay, the pier attracts throngs of sight seers, anglers, boating enthusiasts and diners to the historic café at the end of the pier.

The pier is wheel chair friendly, but a person in a wheel chair could not access the lower level of the pier. To overcome this problem, Parks Victoria contracted Civil One to design and build an access ramp and pick up platform on the lower level so pleasure boats can pick up and drop off disabled people.

Lorne Swing Bridge

Civil One completed extensive renovations and restoration of the historic swing bridge at Lorne in 2003.

The project included:

  • Installation of new droppers

  • Restoration of existing timber work

  • Installation and  anchor of new stay cables

Geelong Slip Way

Geelong Slip Way Restoration was completed in 2001 for the Royal Geelong Yacht Club.

The project provided for the:-

  • Relaying of Crushed Rock

  • Installation of Concrete Foundation

  • Installation of New Rail & Cable

Waterways Estate

The Award Winning Waterways Estate was opened in 2004 by Premier Steve Bracks. The project was designed and undertaken by the Haynes Group who directly commissioned JSP Civil (Vic) P/L (Now Civil One) to construct Burnakin Jetties.

A prestige residential housing development, is located at Braeside, a suburb in Melbourne’s south east. Here stately homes surround a large man made lake, giving residents a pleasant outlook and a place to take a stroll or observe the resident birdlife.

To improve access to the lake and enhance the amenity of the waterway, developers Portland House Group contracted Civil One to build a large viewing platform on the lake’s edge with two jetties extending out into the lake from the edge of the viewing platform to form a ‘U’ shape.

At the same time, Civil One also built a timber bridge across the lake to improve access and traffic flow. Today, residents and visitors use this bridge extensively.

Four years later Civil One built a second viewing platform with two jetties about 400 metres from the original.

Completion Date:

Road Bridge, Jetty 1 & Jetty 2 - January to May 2003

Peninsula School

Footbridge for The Peninsula School, Mt Eliza

Civil One faced a number of challenges when it built a new timber footbridge for The Peninsula School at Mount Eliza. These included gaining access to the steep building site, overcoming environmental issues and removing the existing structure.

Solving the access problem required using a smaller excavator and adapting other equipment to suit the site. The design of the bridge had to blend into the natural surrounds, while building work had to minimise the impact on the natural surrounds.

The company achieved this by using ACQ treated hardwood timbers as the primary building material and spotted gum treated hardwood for the decking, posts and handrails, with stainless steel balustrade wire infill for safety.

A driven pile system provided foundations for the 17m x 1.5m structure, utilising treated timber piles with pile centres based on a 2.4 metre grid, to reduce any impact on the natural contour of the creek.

Crystal Waters - Bridges

Access bridges, Crystal Waters Estate, Keysborough

Access to nearby parklands and sporting fields was a problem at this a large residential housing estate at Keysborough, a leafy suburb on Melbourne’s fringe. A long, rocky drainage area separated residents from these excellent sporting and recreation facilities.

In 2006, Civil One contracted with the estate’s developers to design and build two timber   bridges that would span the drains and provide residents easy access to these amenities.

Each of the spans was 17 metres long and three metres wide. A driven treated timber piling system supports each bridge, with spotted gum hardwood being the main building material used in a fully bolted construction system.

The Crystal Waters Estate Bridges were designed with particular consideration given to the surrounding environment. Being an area kept in keeping with natural fauna and flora, this project had its own unique challenges.

Construction Period: January / February 2007

Latrobe University

La Trobe University, Bundoora

A recent addition to the university’s campus is a boardwalk that takes students, visitors and researchers through a wetland development without disturbing the environment.

Civil One achieved this environmental milestone by building a timber boardwalk through environmentally sensitive areas to link with a boardwalk that spans a waterway created by a very large dam built by the university.

The knowledge gained from this project and the building techniques applied have allowed Civil One to become a leader in this specialist environmental field.
